If you’re craving an icy beverage but don’t have a slushie maker or blender, not to worry! Here’s a recipe for making slushie the old-fashioned way with ice cubes and salt.
Slushies and iced beverages are a great way to refresh and hydrate your body during a clear liquid diet, especially if you’re doing it during the summer. But don’t let your lack of a slushie maker stop you, try this old fashioned method using common ingredients around your home instead.
The basic principle is pretty simple, but you will need to take care not to let the salt and ice mixture seep into the juice bag. In case you’re wondering why we add salt, the purpose of the salt is to keep the ice colder – you definitely do not eat it!
It will take a bit of arm muscle to make, but you should get your slushie within 10 minutes or so. So roll up your sleeves, and let’s begin.
Old Fashioned Soda Slushie
Cooking Time: 10 minutes
Serves: 1
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fruit juice or soda (Ensure they are clear liquid diet and colonoscopy safe. No red colors.)
- 6 cups ice cubes
- 2 Tbsp rock salt, ice cream salt, or other coarse food-grade salt*
- 1 large Ziploc bag
- 1 small Ziploc bag
Instructions:
- In the large Ziploc bag, combine ice cubes and salt. Set aside.
- Now, check your small Ziploc bag to make sure there are no holes. Then, fill the small Ziploc bag halfway with juice/soda. Press out all the air, and seal tightly. Make sure it is sealed tightly with absolutely no leaks; if it’s not tightly closed, salt will seep in and ruin your food.
- Place the small bag of juice/soda inside the large bag of ice. Try and place the small bag in the middle of the large bag, so it is surround by ice. Seal the large Ziploc bag. You should now have one large ziploc bag containing both ice and the small Ziploc bag with juice/soda.
- Wrap the bag in a towel to protect your hands from the cold, and shake the bag vigorously for 3-5 minutes, or until the juice starts turns into icy slush. Continue shaking until it reaches the slushy consistency you like.
- When ready, carefully remove the small Ziploc bag from the bag of ice. Wipe down the bag to remove any salt and ice.
- Open the bag carefully, and pour into a serving glass.
*The salt will not be coming into contact with your food, but to be on the safe side with any cooking tasks, it is safest to use food grade salt where possible.
