What is colonoscopy prep like, really?
Hi everyone, I’m scheduled for a colonoscopy next week and I’m feeling really nervous. I keep reading about the prep and… honestly, it sounds scary. Would love to hear from others who have been there and done it. What is colonoscopy prep like in reality? How strict are the clear liquids? Any tips to make it easier or give some idea of what to expect would be amazing. Thanks in advance!
Most people get through it without issues, despite the minor discomfort. The clear liquid diet is quite strict, but this website and forum has some really good resources for meal prep, recipes and other helpful info for getting ready – you can access most of the articles via the links in the top menu. The eBook is also good.
Stay hydrated, plan to be near a bathroom, stick to the diet plan, and don’t hesitate to ask your care team questions.
Also, keep a little “prep kit” near the bathroom — extra wipes, a towel, maybe even a book or phone. It sounds silly, but being prepared makes it less stressful.
It’s not as bad as it seems. Just follow the doc’s instructions, keep the prep drink cold, and use a straw — makes it easier to get down. That’s about it.
Hi OwlCatcher!
Totally get the nerves. For me the toughest thing was not eating solid food the day before, but really, it’s only for one day. Prepare clear liquid meals in advance so they’re ready to go, and keep some treats like jello and candies nearby. You’ll be fine.
One thing that helped me: freeze clear apple juice into ice cubes and suck on them between sips of the prep drink or whenever you’re feeling hungry. And clear veggie broth with a dash of ginger can be really comforting.
Just had mine the other week. Honestly, not as bad as I expected. It helps if you’re used to regular fasting like me, though. Deep breaths, lots of water, and trust the process. You’ll get through it.
