A decadent dessert to enjoy after dinner, during your clear liquid diet or anytime. This is a classic pairing of hazelnut and black espresso coffee, in jello format.

Since espresso is the highlight of this dessert, we recommend you purchase high quality single-origin or other beans of your choosing, and grind them yourself, for the best taste experience.
This recipe makes a regular-strength jelly/jello, similar to the consistency of a packet of Jell-O. For a stronger jello that can be set in a loaf pan and sliced, you might want to increase the gelatin powder by 1.5x (3 envelopes) or double (4 envelopes).
If you are having this as an after-dinner dessert and are sensitive to caffeine, then you can replace the coffee with decaffeinated coffee. Although dark in color, coffee is safe to consume on a clear liquid diet, and the caffeine does not seem to be a problem for colonoscopy preparation according to health experts (unlike alcohol, which should not be consumed).
This dessert will also leave you feeling full, especially if you increase the gelatin amount, due to the protein in the gelatin. Remember not to add any dairy, creamer or soy milk – the coffee must be black, since dairy and non-clear liquids are off-limits during colonoscopy prep.
Hazelnut & Black Espresso Jello (colonoscopy prep recipe)
Cooking Time: 15 minutes + 4 hours refrigeration time
Servings: 8
Ingredients
- 60mL hazelnut-flavored syrup*
- 2 envelopes (1/2 oz / 14g) gelatin powder
- 500mL boiling water
- 500mL freshly brewed strong espresso coffee, cooled to room temperature
Method
- In a large bowl, place boiling water, hazelnut syrup and gelatin powder.
- Stir briskly until gelatin has fully dissolved, then stir in coffee.
- Pour jelly mixture into individual serving glasses.
- Refrigerate for about 4 hours or until set.
- Serve chilled.
*You can replace this with any other flavored syrup of your choice that pairs well with black coffee, such as Vanilla or Irish Cream flavored syrup. You can often find these syrups in specialty cooking stores, sold as coffee syrups. Make sure to check the ingredients, as some may contain ‘off limits’ ingredients such as dairy. Alternatively, you can substitute it with 50g sugar.
