Reader Question: "Can I eat pizza after a colonoscopy?"

"How soon after a colonoscopy can I eat normal food again — like pizza? I’m trying to plan ahead and pizza is my #1 go-to comfort food! I really need something tasty to look forward to, I don’t cope with fasting very well."

I get it—after a period of meal adjustments and fasting from certain foods, pizza sounds like heaven! Your desire to return to your number one comfort food is absolutely valid.

Your digestive system (especially your colon) may be a little sensitive right after a colonoscopy, even more so if you’ve had polyps removed or biopsies taken. Hence, eating some foods while in this sensitive state could lead to symptoms like abdominal pain and bloating.

The bad news is that pizza is one such food. The good news is you probably only need to wait 24 hours before eating a slice of your favorite pizza.

Why do you have to wait? Pizza is often greasy, cheesy, and high in fat, which can be harder to digest right away. If you eat it too soon, it could trigger cramping or diarrhea.

In the first 24 hours, starting with clear liquids like water, broths, and electrolyte drinks is advisable before moving to soft, low-fiber foods like plain white rice, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs.

If you feel fine after 24 hours, with no nausea, bloating, or abdominal discomfort, you can start easing back into your normal diet, and reward yourself for faithfully following through the entire colonoscopy procedure with your beloved pizza.
