Suggestions for clear liquid diet easy meals
Hi everyone,
My other half has been booked in for a colonoscopy next month. He needs to go on a clear liquid diet, and I’m trying to make sure I get it absolutely right. I’ve read a bunch of lists online, but I’m still second-guessing myself because some of the examples out there seem a bit contradictory.
On my list so far I've got:
- Chicken broth (strained, no bits)
- Apple juice and white grape juice
- Lemon/lime sports drinks
- Plain gelatin (lemon flavour)
- Herbal tea (no milk)
I was thinking about making some homemade “clear” soups with vegetable broth and maybe straining them really well — but would that still count as clear if it’s slightly cloudy from the veggies? I don’t want to mess this up.
Also — is weak black tea okay, or should I stick to herbal? I’ve seen both yes and no online, and it’s making me nervous.
If anyone has any suggestions for clear liquid diet easy “meal” ideas (even if it’s just a different way to serve the same few things) that worked for you or someone you’ve cared for, I’d love suggestions. I want to keep him from feeling like he’s just sipping the same thing over and over all day.
Thanks in advance — I know this sounds like a small thing, but I really want to make this go as smoothly as possible for him.
Cheers, Angie
Hi Angela!
Thanks so much for your post — you’re such a caring wife, and I’m sure your husband will appreciate all the thought you’re putting into this. You’re right, the “clear” part can get a bit confusing, so it’s great you’re double-checking.
We’ve actually got some great guides and clear liquid diet recipes already up on the site that might help. You can follow the links in the top main menu, and head here for a selection of meal ideas:

And yes — weak black tea is usually fine, but check with the doctor’s instructions to be sure. For more info, check our Food FAQ about Tea.
Hope that helps take some of the stress out of it! 😊
Much love,
Christie K
Hey Angie
You’ve already got a great base list going — honestly, you’re halfway there. I’ve been through a few of these “clear diet” days myself (supporting my dad and also doing it for my own procedure), and I’ve learned that presentation makes a huge difference.
A few easy ideas to mix it up:
- Layered jelly cups — make two flavours of clear gelatin and let them set in layers in a wine glass. Looks fancy, feels less “hospital diet.”
- Citrus ice pops — freeze diluted lemon-lime sports drink or strained lemonade in ice pop moulds. Fun change from just sipping.
- Broth latte — heat up the broth and whisk it a little so it’s frothy in the mug. Weirdly comforting!
- Herbal tea “mocktails” — brew peppermint or chamomile, chill, and serve over ice with a slice of lemon (just for aroma, not to eat).
You’ve totally got this. Once you have a few different textures and serving styles, it feels a lot less monotonous.
Thanks so much, Christie and Jess
Christie — I’ll check out that link, sounds perfect. I think having a proper list from people who actually know what counts will calm me down a lot.
Jess — love your clear liquid diet suggestions! The layered jelly cups and broth latte especially — I never would have thought of those. I think the popsicles will be a hit too, especially if I can make them tonight and have them ready to go.
Feeling much more confident now — really appreciate you both taking the time to reply.
