It’s been really difficult for me to find clear soup options at my local supermarket – everything has ‘stuff’ in it like vegetables, meat or lentils. Does anyone have ideas for where to buy clear soup for colonoscopy prep (soup, consomme, broth etc.) that’s *actually* clear and residue-free?

Honestly, it’s harder than you’d think. Even the ones that look clear on the label come out cloudy with bits in them. Trick is: strain everything. Swanson chicken broth or Pacific bone broth are fine if you pour them through a coffee filter.

Yes! I did the Swanson one last time — after straining, it was completely clear and tasted okay. If you want something ready-to-go, Bare Bones makes a powdered broth you just mix with hot water. I actually liked having it in a thermos to sip on.

@jessie-puppy This might be a silly question, but when you say “strain,” do you mean like through a sieve?

Not silly at all! Best way is to use cheesecloth or even a clean coffee filter like Glen said, so that all the herbs, fats, and cloudy stuff are left behind. If you can’t see straight through it in the bowl, it’s not clear enough.
A sieve by itself won’t work – the holes are too big and will let through residue.
Another thing: Always read the ingredients list. If it has potato, skip it. It will be almost certainly be cloudy.

I’ve been looking for options too for my husband. Brodo sells a frozen broth online that’s actually completely clear once you heat it up. Has anyone here tried it?

@hubby-prepper Yes, I ordered Brodo — comes frozen, and once heated it was crystal clear, no straining needed. Pricey, but saved me some stress.

Hi Raj,

Another option is to make your own consommé or simple broth at home. It can be prepared in a big batch and then frozen in small portions so you’ve got it ready in advance.

Just remember: if you can’t see right through it, it’s not clear enough for prep.

Thanks everyone, this really helped. I strained some Swanson since I could get it nearby, and ordered Bare Bones for backup. No issues! Appreciate all the tips!
