Hi everyone,

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I’m starting my colonoscopy preparation tomorrow and I’m a little worried… will a clear liquid diet cause diarrhea before I even take the prep drink?

I’ve read that all the broths and juices can keep things moving, and I’m already feeling a bit off from nerves. I guess I’m wondering if I should stay near a bathroom all day or if that’s just once the prep kicks in?

Thanks so much in advance — this website has seriously been such a help.

Hey Laura! Not silly at all — I wondered the same thing. The clear liquid diet might make things a little looser for some people just because there's no bulk to it, but it's not full-on diarrhea or anything.

It’s more that your body’s just not digesting anything solid. Once you take the prep drink, that’s when the magic begins. 😅

Hi Laura —
Just chiming in to say I had the same concern last week. I felt a little light and gurgly on the clear liquids, but nothing major happened until I started the prep.

Have a calm day, drink slow, and keep a comfy spot ready for the evening. Good luck.

Hi Laura,
This is a great question. Everyone responds a little differently, but in most cases, the clear liquid phase is gentle — it’s mainly about avoiding anything your body needs to digest.

If anything feels too fast-moving even before the prep, just note how you’re feeling and make sure to stay hydrated. And always trust your body — if something feels off, a quick call to your doctor’s office can bring peace of mind.

You’re doing the right thing asking questions. 💛

Nope, clear liquids won’t send you running.
The real fun starts with the prep.
Just stay hydrated and you’ll be fine.
