Been through prep a couple times now and figured I’d share what actually helped me avoid the worst of the skin burn/chafing.

  • Baby wipes instead of toilet paper. Way gentler.
  • A little petroleum jelly before things get sore saves you later.
  • Loose shorts around the house, skip the tight waistbands.

Nothing fancy, just small stuff that made it more bearable. Anyone have other tips to add?

Oh wow, I didn’t even think about chafing until you mentioned it. 😳 Thanks for the heads up. Did your doctor say petroleum jelly is okay, or is it just something you tried on your own?

@laura_r_88 Just finished my prep last week. I was worried about the soreness too, but barrier cream definitely helped. And honestly, the anticipation was worse than the reality. You’ll get through it, Laura.

Laura, it’s a pretty common tip — I’ve seen people use petroleum jelly or a gentle diaper cream.
Another idea: pat dry with a soft cloth instead of rubbing. Makes a difference when the skin’s already tender.

Yes to wipes and cream! 🙌 I also kept a little bowl of warm water with a clean washcloth nearby — it felt nicer than running back and forth to the bathroom tap every time.

Thanks, everyone — really reassuring to know I’m not the only one overthinking this. I’ll grab some wipes and cream. Feeling a bit less nervous now.

I’m prepping for my husband and just added wipes and diaper cream to the shopping list. Quick question — is unscented really that important, or can I just use what we already have at home?

Unscented is best — less sting. Trust me on that one.
